NOSTALGIA NATIONALS to GO WILD
The annual ‘Big Go’ of the Nostalgia series, the NITRO! Magazine Nostalgia Nationals is set to become a ‘War with Doors’ over two days with the return of State of Origin Wild Bunch on the August 14-15th weekend ... Created in the USA in the eighties, the Wild Bunch came to Australia and made a home for itself at Willowbank Raceway. With touring American stars Camp Stanley and Tommy Howes showing the Aussies how it was done with their professional on-track performance, side-by-side burnouts, dry hops, throttle blips and out-the-back-door racing, it didn’t take long for the locals to get up to speed. Pretty soon, the Aussie Wild Bunch was full of local blown sedans that toured the country, and eventually ended up in a State of Origin series of races between Queensland and New South Wales cars. Then Top Doorslammer came along and the Wild Bunch died.
Only three original cars and drivers remain to this day. Reigning NSW captain Benny Gatt and his Hardtop Falcon, Lindsay Churchill’s ‘Norma’ 57 Chev and sole Queenslander Garthe McIntyre’s HQ. A large number of debutantes will help both teams to reach full-strength, with many only dreaming about one day appearing in a Wild Bunch show. If all the planets align and entries arrive, the following will be featured in the NSW and QLD teams.
For NSW: Benny Gatt, Lindsay Churchill, John Babington, Chad Taylor, Michelle Davies, Dennis Pinchbeck, Aaron Betts, Frank Mamone, Deno Brijeski, Travis Connor.
For QLD: Garthe McIntyre, Tim Caswell, Micheal Davey, Luke Mackenzie, Robert Coleman, John Loy, Colin Gardiner, Louie Galea, Phil Markham, Simon Graham
All of the NDRA classes will be on show as well over the two day meet, including Nostalgia Outlaw, Junior Fuel, Slingshot, Gas, Vintage Gas, Hot Rod, Aussie Muscle, US Muscle, Aussie Six Banger, Hambster, Classic Bike and Outlaw Bike. Qualifying is Saturday, with racing on Sunday; with Chicago Shootout racing format in most fields.
